THE LEINSTER LEAGUE V BELFAST & DISTRICT LEAGUE MATCH TOOK PLACE ON SATURDAY 22nd

This match was first played in 1946 and has been played every year since with the exception of a couple of years during the foot and mouth epidemic. That’s some achievement. As usual the match was played in a real friendly and sporting manner that involved some great table tennis and is was great to see plenty of spectators at it.

Division 1

This match started off being a real close one with the first two games shared. The third game was a real nail biter and we thought we had it won when John led 9-7 in the 5th set.But fair play to Willie Cherry who didn’t give up and got back to 9-9 and eventually won it 10/12. Derek then beat Phil Wallace in the 4th set to make it 2-2. Willie Cherry was again involved in another nail biter. This time against Csaba who beat him 12/10 in the 5th set. John won the next one against Martin Pickles to lead 4-2. Next match up was Derek against Willie Cherry and Willie got off to a great start winning the first two sets but Derek came back to win it 11/7 in the 5th set. That gave Leinster the match. The last two games Belfast won but Csaba only lost his 10/12 in the 5th set.

Result: 5-4

Division 2

There were five games that went to five sets in this match so it was much closer than the result suggests. It started off with Dave Butler losing a five set game to Syd Beasant but Marta beat Peter Moffit in straight sets to make 1-1. Peter told me later that he had been really looking forward to playing her because she was a lovely open player but realised fairly quickly that she was just too good for him.  The next two games were both five setters with Dave Pender beating Andy Loane 11/6 in the 5th having been two sets up and Marta lost to Syd 5/11 in the 5th. The score was now 2-2. Leinster won the next five games and Dave Pender was involved in another two five setters winning both.

Result: 7-2

Division 3

This match didn’t really go our way from the word go. The Belfast team were just that bit too strong and all played with pimples or anti loop. There were only two five setters in the match.  The lads fought really hard and never gave up but it just wasn’t our day.

Result: 0-9

The Belfast & District League match versus Leinster League took place on Saturday 23rd March, in Belfast. There was brilliant table tennis in all three matches and all were played in the best sporting manner possible. Although we lost the match 2-1 we had a very enjoyable days table tennis and great to watch.

Division 1

Unfortunately Leinster got off to a very bad start losing the first 4 games. Although some of the scores were close Leinster really didn’t get a look in until the 5th game when Pat Mc Cloughan beat Willie Cherry in a really close 4 set match. Derek beat Philip Wallace in another really close game winning 14/16 in the 4th set. Things were looking up as we now only trailing 4-2. Pat had to play Daryl Strong next and Daryl is a very strong player and won in straight sets giving Belfast the win. However we continued on playing and Artur beat Philip in 4 sets, two of the sets being 12/10, so a very close game. The last game was Derek against Willie and again we had two 2/10 sets but Derek won in the 4th set. If the lads had off to a better start I think we could have won this match.

Result: 5-4

Division 2

Paul started off the match against Jack Cash and won the first set but Jack came back and won the next three. Dave was next up against Maurice Rooney, who has funny rubbers, and lost to him in straight sets. Next it was pimpled rubber versus pimpled rubber, Robbie against Martin Pickles. Robbie played a great tactical game to win in the 4th set.  Paul had a good match against Jack but lost 11/9 in the 4th set. Robbie had a great win over Jack , again in the 4th set, which left us trailing 3-2. Unfortunately we didn’t win another match but the lads played great and the last three games were all lost in the 4th set.

Result: 7-2

Division 3

This match was the most exciting of the three matches. Andre won the first one against Mike Connolly in a tense 5th set. Another close game followed with Louise up against Brian Calvert and it was neck and neck all the way but Louise kept her composure and won 11/13 in the 4th set. Then we had the ever young Ted Mahaffy against the even younger Eddie. Ted won in straights but the sets but very close ones. The next game also went Belfast’s way with Andre losing to Brian 11/9 in the 5th set. The score was now 2-2.  Eddie lived up to his name, steady Eddie, and won his match against Mike in straight sets to put us in the lead again. Louise had a great win over Ted in the 4th set to leave Belfast trailing 2-4. In the next match between Brian and Eddie there was a brilliant rally which Eddie finished off with a powerful back-hand and Brian showed his appreciation by bowing to him. Brian won the match 11/9 in the 5th set. The score is now 3-4. Andre was now up against Ted and Louise was hoping he would win so the pressure would not all be on her last game and he didn’t let her down winning a very close game in the 4th set. Louise went on to win her game 11/8 in the 5th set.

Result: 3-6

WELL DONE TO ALL THE PLAYERS FOR MAKING IT AN ENJOYABLE AND COMPETITIVE MATCH PLAYED IN THE SPIRIT IN WHICH IT IS MEANT TO BE PLAYED. THERE WAS GREAT SUPPORT FROM THE BELFAST LEAGUE WHICH WAS LOVELY TO SEE. HOPEFULLY WE’LL GET THE SAME SUPPORT FROM OUR PLAYERS WHEN IT’S PLAYED IN DUBLIN NEXT YEAR. AS PAT O’BRIEN SAYS IT’S AN HONOUR TO BE SELECTED TO PLAY FOR LEINSTER’. ITS ALSO AN HONOUR TO BE ABLE TO WATCH SOME GREAT TABLE TENNIS.
