The Leinster Table Tennis League is affiliated to the Irish Table Tennis Association, and runs from November – April. Leinster League matches are played on weeknights and involve teams with 3 players each. The league includes players of all standards, ranging from beginners up to international standard. The season consists of 3 competitions: Shield, League and Cup.
Shield
The shield begins at the start of November and runs for 6 weeks. Teams are divided into groups of 4, and team plays each other Home and Away. Each match involves 6 games of singles and 3 games of doubles. Teams are awarded a point for each singles and doubles game that they win.
League
The League starts in January and runs for 10 weeks. Teams are divided into groups of 6, and play each other Home and Away. A league match consists of 9 singles, but if the final score if 5-4, there is one deciding doubles game. Teams are awarded 2 points for a win, and 1 win point for a draw if the match end 5-5.
Cup
The cup starts at the end of March and runs for 3 weeks. Teams are divided into groups of 8, and this is a straight knock-out competition, with matches played over one leg. A cup match is over after a team a team wins 7 points. A cup match can consist of a maximum of 9 singles, 3 doubles, and 1 one final deciding doubles if the score is 6-6.
Belfast & District League
The Leinster League takes part in an annual friendly match against players from the Belfast & District League. The match alternates between Belfast and Dublin each year, and involves 3 teams of players representing each league.
Presentation Night
The annual end of year presentation night takes place in May, and awards are given for the individuals and team standings in each competition. Perpetual trophies are given to the winning teams in each League and Cup division.
